What Is An Ecovillage?

An ecovillage, or ecological village, is a grassroots, human-scale, urban or rural community aimed at developing environments with a low-impact way of life. In an ecovillage, human needs and the natural world are integrated in such a way that human development and sustainable environment into the indefinite future are not exclusive.

Ecovillages are flexible, democratic and where decision making is decentralized and collective information is shared. Its organization is bottom-up instead of top-down and composed of people that share the same vision of responsibility for their own energy sources, food production and healthy human development characterized in terms that are not only material and utilitarian.

Ecovillages around the world are generally designed around permaculture principles, a form or agriculture that doesn't harm the earth. An ecovillage will integrate various aspects of permaculture, composting and recycling, natural design, efficient building, renewable energy and community living that emphasizes cooperation and sharing.

When ecovillages succeed we all benefit: environments are intelligently and consciously designed; agriculture becomes ecologically sound; waste is almost entirely recycled or significantly diminished; water resources are better managed; energy is used efficiently and new forms of non-fossil energy are promoted; whole regions are reforested; community and cultural life is restored to rural and urban areas; art and tourism is revived and much more.
